Getting Organized For Your Move


Moving can be one of the most daunting tasks you will take on when selling your home. Organizing your home so that you can simplify your move may not seem practical at the time. However, the main reason to organize your home is so that you will increase your chances of selling your home faster and possibly for more money.


While you are going through the process of organizing, you should also be eliminating things from your home to clear out clutter.  Eliminating clutter is one of the first things that agents will advise you to do so that you home showing will go much easier. I have come up with 5 tips to help make your move more organized.


1.    Sort

Start by sorting your things into piles such as: keep, giveaway, maybe and trash. The “maybe” pile is for things that you can box up and check back in 6 months. If you haven’t used it in 6 months, then it’s time to get rid of it.

2.    Store and Label

Store your things in clear plastic bins that way you can see what is in the bin. Even though you can see what’s in the bin you still need to label. Labeling allows whoever is helping you move to be able to take the bin to the correct room.  There is no such thing as too many labels.

3.    Clean Up

Arrange for the home to be thoroughly cleaned after all your furniture has been moved. A clean home and a fresh scent can go a long way with future homebuyers.

4.    Unload

Unload the boxes and put them in the center of the correct room according to their label. This way as you unpack boxes you can organize the room as you want it.

5.    Pack a Survival Kit

Pack a kit of the following items to use while you are transitioning into your new home for the first night: Toilet paper, shower curtain, snacks, bottled water, cleaning products, air mattress/blankets, flashlights and a first aid kit.
